What does this tool do?

Code 128 encodes letters and numbers and suits internal labels and shipping. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the retail product codes scanned at checkouts; their last digit is a check digit, calculated automatically if you leave it out.

Why use it?

  • Inventory and asset labels.
  • Product packaging mockups.
  • Vector SVG for print.

Choosing a type

Internal use: Code 128. Retail in most countries: EAN-13. Retail in the US and Canada: UPC-A. Shipping cartons: ITF-14.

Accuracy and limits

  • To sell in stores, product numbers must come from GS1. Making the image here doesn't register a number.

Privacy

Everything you type is processed in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers or stored by us. There's no account to create and nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make my own EAN or UPC codes for products in shops?

You can generate the barcode image, but retailers require numbers issued to your company by GS1. Made-up numbers can clash with other products and are usually rejected.

Which barcode should I use for inventory or shipping labels?

Code 128 is the usual choice. It stores letters and numbers compactly and almost every scanner reads it.
