What does this tool do?

Job offers and pay slips use different periods, which makes them hard to compare. This converter turns any pay rate into all the common ones, based on your actual working pattern.

All figures are gross (before tax and deductions). Tax rules differ by country, so we don't estimate take-home pay.

Why use it?

  • Compare an hourly contract with a salaried job.
  • Work out your effective hourly rate.
  • Budget on a monthly basis when you're paid weekly.

Example: $25 an hour

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $25/hour is $52,000 a year, $4,333.33 a month and $1,000 a week.

HourlyYearly (40 h × 52 wk)Monthly
$15$31,200$2,600
$20$41,600$3,466.67
$25$52,000$4,333.33
$30$62,400$5,200
$50$104,000$8,666.67

The formula

Yearly = Hourly × Hours per week × Weeks per year
Monthly = Yearly ÷ 12

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in a year?

At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, 2,080 hours. With two weeks of unpaid leave, 2,000.

How do I compare a salary with an hourly contract rate?

Contractors usually aren't paid for holidays, sick days or benefits, so a fair contract rate is higher than the salary's hourly equivalent. Many people add 20–40% on top to cover the difference, depending on the country and the benefits involved.
