Free Word Counter — Count Words & Characters Online

Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, with reading time and keyword density. Free, private and works on any device.

Google truncates by pixel width (about 580px for titles), not characters, and sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions. This preview estimates the width using Arial, the font Google uses for results.

Everything you type is processed in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers or stored by us.

How to use the SERP Snippet Preview

  1. Type your title tag and meta description.
  2. Add the page URL.
  3. Adjust until both bars are green.

What does this tool do?

Google cuts titles at roughly 580 pixels on desktop, not at a fixed number of characters — “WWW” takes far more room than “iii”. The preview measures your text in the font Google uses for results, so it's much more reliable than a character count.

Why use it?

  • Avoid truncated titles.
  • Write descriptions that read well in results.
  • Compare variations quickly.

Example

“The Complete Guide to Compressing Images for the Web Without Losing Quality in 2026” is about 85 characters and will be cut off. “How to Compress Images Without Losing Quality” fits comfortably.

Privacy

Everything you type is processed in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers or stored by us. There's no account to create and nothing to install.

Frequently asked questions

Will Google show my title exactly as I wrote it?

Not always. Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another version fits the search better. Clear, accurate titles that match the page are rewritten less often.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150–160 characters usually fits on desktop, and less on mobile. Google truncates by pixel width, which is why this preview measures your text rather than just counting characters.
