How to use the Typing Speed Test
- Choose a test length.
- Click the box and start typing the passage — the timer starts on your first key.
- See your speed and accuracy when time runs out.
What does this tool do?
Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where a “word” is counted as five correctly typed characters — the standard definition used by typing tests. Mistakes are highlighted as you type and don't count towards your speed.
Why use it?
- Track your progress over time.
- Practise for jobs that require a typing speed.
- Warm up before writing.
How fast is fast?
Most adults type 35–45 WPM. 60+ WPM is above average, and professional typists often exceed 80 WPM.
Privacy
Everything you type is processed in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers or stored by us. There's no account to create and nothing to install.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 words per minute is typical for adults. 60 WPM or more is good for office work, and professional typists often exceed 80 WPM. Accuracy matters as much as speed.
Can I paste text into the test?
No. Pasting is disabled in the typing box, so the result reflects your actual typing.
