How to use the GZIP Compress & Decompress

  1. Choose Compress or Decompress.
  2. Pick your file.
  3. Download the result.

What does this tool do?

GZIP is the standard compression for web assets, logs and Unix archives. This tool uses the browser's native CompressionStream, so it's fast and handles large files by streaming them.

Why use it?

  • Open .gz logs and data exports.
  • Check how well a file compresses for the web.
  • No command line needed.

.tar.gz files

Decompressing a .tar.gz gives you a .tar archive. That's a bundle of files; extract it with your operating system or archive software.

Privacy

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Files are read and processed in your browser, and results are saved straight back to your device.

What's the difference between GZIP and ZIP?

GZIP compresses a single file, while ZIP can hold many files and folders. To compress several files the Unix way, bundle them into a .tar first, then GZIP it — that's a .tar.gz.
