How to use the Create TAR Archive
- Choose your files.
- Name the archive and choose whether to compress it.
- Download the .tar or .tar.gz file.
What does this tool do?
The archive follows the POSIX ustar format, which every Unix tool (and modern Windows) can extract. Compressing it with GZIP gives the familiar .tar.gz used for Linux packages and backups.
Why use it?
- Prepare uploads for Linux servers.
- Bundle files the Unix way.
- No terminal needed.
Extracting it
On macOS or Linux: tar -xzf archive.tar.gz. On Windows 10/11: tar -xzf archive.tar.gz in Command Prompt, or open it with 7-Zip.
Privacy
Your files are processed entirely in your browser using built-in web technologies. They are not uploaded to our servers, and closing the page clears them from memory. There's no account to create and nothing to install.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. Files are read and processed in your browser, and results are saved straight back to your device.
Can Windows open .tar and .tar.gz files?
Yes. Windows 10 and 11 include the tar command, recent versions of Windows 11 open these archives in File Explorer, and free tools like 7-Zip handle them too.
