How to use the Title Case Converter

  1. Paste one or more titles, one per line.
  2. Choose a style guide.
  3. Copy the correctly capitalized titles.

What does this tool do?

Title case rules differ between style guides. All of them capitalize the first and last word and “major” words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs). The difference is what counts as a minor word.

Chicago lowercases articles, coordinating conjunctions and all prepositions. AP and APA lowercase only short words of three letters or fewer. Words after a colon are capitalized, and brand names with unusual capitals (iPhone, eBay) are left as they are.

Why use it?

  • Consistent headlines for blogs, newsletters and papers.
  • Follow your publication's style guide.
  • Handles hyphenated compounds and colons.

Example

Frequently asked questions

Which title case style should I use?

Follow whatever your publication uses. AP style is common in news and marketing, Chicago in books and many blogs, and APA in academic writing. If you have no style guide, pick one and use it consistently.

Should “is” be capitalized in a title?

Yes. “Is” is a verb, and AP, Chicago and APA all capitalize verbs however short they are. The small words that stay lowercase are mostly articles, short conjunctions and prepositions.
