How to use the Final Exam Grade Calculator

  1. Enter your current grade in the class.
  2. Enter the overall grade you want.
  3. Enter how much the final exam is worth.
  4. Read the score you need, plus a table of outcomes.

What does this tool do?

Your final grade is a blend of your current grade and your final exam score, weighted by how much the final counts. Rearranging that gives the score you need.

Why use it?

  • Know how hard to study.
  • See whether your goal is still possible.
  • Check the grade you'd get with different scores.

Example

With 84% now, a target of 90% and a final worth 30%: needed = (90 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 104%. That's only possible with extra credit — but a target of 87% needs 94%.

The formula

Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
w = final exam weight ÷ 100

Frequently asked questions

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your school's pass mark as the target. With 72% now and a final worth 25%, passing at 60% needs (60 − 72 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 24%. Check whether your course also requires a minimum score on the final itself.

What does it mean if I need more than 100%?

The target can't be reached through the final exam alone. Lower the target to see what's still possible, or ask your instructor about extra credit.

Can the final exam lower my grade?

Yes. Scoring below your current grade on the final pulls your overall grade down, and the more the final is worth, the further it can move it. The table shows your overall grade at 60% to 100% on the final.

My class uses points, not percentages. Does this work?

Yes, once you convert. Your current grade is points earned ÷ points available so far × 100, and the final's weight is its points ÷ the course total × 100.

How is the score I need worked out?

Required score = (target − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. With a current grade of 82%, a target of 85% and a final worth 30%: (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 92%.
