GPA = total grade points ÷ total credits. Each course's grade points are its grade value × its credits.

How to use the GPA Calculator

  1. Choose your school's scale (4.0 or 4.3).
  2. Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours.
  3. Read your semester GPA.
  4. To update a cumulative GPA, open “Add previous semesters” and enter your current GPA and credits.

What does this tool do?

GPA (grade point average) is a credit-weighted average: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours, added up, and divided by the total credits. A 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit one.

On the common 4.0 scale an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0 and so on, with plus and minus grades in between. Some schools give an A+ 4.3.

Why use it?

  • Plan which grades you need for scholarships or honors.
  • Check your transcript math.
  • Combine this semester with your cumulative record.

Example

English (A, 3 credits), Calculus (B+, 4 credits), Biology (A−, 4 credits) and History (B, 3 credits): grade points = 12 + 13.2 + 14.8 + 9 = 49. Divide by 14 credits and the GPA is 3.50.

B3.083–86
B−2.780–82

The formula

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Cumulative = (old GPA × old credits + new points) ÷ (old credits + new credits)

Accuracy and limits

  • Schools differ on scales, plus/minus values and whether honors or AP classes are weighted. Your registrar's calculation is official.

Frequently asked questions

Do pass/fail courses count toward GPA?

Usually not. They earn credits but have no grade points, so leave them out of the calculation.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for every course. A weighted GPA adds extra points for honors, AP or IB classes — often 0.5 or 1.0 — so it can go above 4.0.
