How to use the Weighted Grade Calculator

  1. Enter each category or assignment with its score and weight from the syllabus.
  2. Leave the score blank for anything not graded yet.
  3. Read your current weighted grade and how much of the course is still to come.

What does this tool do?

Most courses weight categories differently — for example homework 20%, quizzes 15%, midterm 25% and final 40%. A weighted average multiplies each score by its weight, so a high homework score can't hide a low exam score.

Ungraded items are left out, and the remaining weights are scaled up, which shows your grade based on the work marked so far.

Why use it?

  • Know where you stand mid-semester.
  • See which category matters most.
  • Pair it with the Final Exam Grade Calculator to plan.

Example

Homework 92% (20%), quizzes 85% (15%) and midterm 78% (25%) with the final not yet taken: (92×20 + 85×15 + 78×25) ÷ 60 = 84.4%.

The formula

Grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weights of graded items

Frequently asked questions

Why is a weighted average different from a simple average?

A simple average treats every score equally. A weighted average gives each category its share of the final grade, so a 40% final exam counts four times as much as a 10% homework category.

How do I turn my percentage into a letter grade?

Check your syllabus, as scales differ. A common US scale is A for 90–100%, B for 80–89%, C for 70–79% and D for 60–69%.
