What does this tool do?

Cost-plus pricing adds a fixed percentage to what an item costs you. It's simple and common in retail and trades. The calculator also shows the gross margin, because a 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin.

Why use it?

  • Fast cost-plus pricing.
  • Shows the matching margin to avoid pricing mistakes.

Example

A product costs $60. With a 50% markup the selling price is $90, the profit is $30, and the gross margin is 33.3%.

The formula

Price = Cost × (1 + Markup ÷ 100)
Margin = Markup ÷ (100 + Markup) × 100

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert markup to margin?

Divide the markup by (1 + markup). A 50% markup is 0.5 ÷ 1.5 = 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup — doubling the cost — is a 50% margin.

What markup should I use?

It depends on your industry, overheads and competitors. Work out your total costs and the profit you need first, then check the price against what similar products sell for.
